I named this newsletter “close but not quite” to capture so many feelings of almost-satisfaction that I have felt in recent weeks and months. I almost started my adult life on my own terms, I almost felt fulfilled by my college education, I almost feel like I can get my mental heath to a stable place, etc. The point of this newsletter is not merely to complain or bemoan my life because that would not be fair or productive. Rather, I want to use these essays to examine and unpack the institutional and structural barriers that have forced me & so many others to accept a “close but not quite” version of what we want out lives to look like. And ultimately, through these essays, I want to envision a better and more fulfilling future.
